Beer for Brunch
J. Fox’s Restaurant and Bar

After a weekend of drunken debauchery, a gentleman or gentlewoman needs to take the corresponding Sunday to reflect and recover. At this point, I suggest sleeping in as late as possible, followed by dim lighting, coffee, and a substantial amount of nutritious and delicious cuisine. Owner of J.Fox’s, Daniel Pedley took note of this predictament and began offering a Sunday brunch at his Celtic gastro pub for the trendy breakfast connoisseurs.

Located at 414 Academy Road, the atmosphere of J. Fox’s is a mix of dark and light. On one side of a large rock wall is a café with flowers and sunlight, the other side outfitted with a bar, dartboard, and television. Flowers and sunshine are fabulous, but I required a beer, plus a hockey game was on. The table was set with ample cutlery, a black cloth napkin and coffee $1.95 was served immediately.

The brunch starts at 10:30 a.m. and finishes at 3:00 p.m. The menu was a la carte and featured a variety of items including eggs, meat, fruit, vegetables and alcohol. The most popular item on the menu was the Big Breakfast, which comes with three eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, and toast for $9.95.

If your craving savory and buttery hollandaise sauce, then you can choose from four types of Eggs Benedict, including traditional, Florentine, smoked salmon, and asparagus for $8.95. Dessert for breakfast is also an option with Belgian Waffles smothered in whipped cream and fresh strawberries for $7.95. All meals on the brunch menu came with hash browns, and a medley of tropical fruit.

Those inclined to have an alcohol beverage could order the hair of the dog special including Caesars and mimosas for $4.50 or a pint of one the twelve draught beers on tap for $4.75.

Although the gastro pub may be known for its Cottage pie and Irish stew, the brunch menu follows the restaurants motto of home crafted, handmade comfort. All the plates on the table were overflowing with food, the fruit and vegetables were fresh, eggs were cooked as ordered, waffles were fluffy, and the beers were a terrific addition to an terrific Sunday afternoon meal.
