Interview with Doug Darling
Q: What made you become a freelancer rather than working as an employee? What personality traits would you say are essential for successful freelancing?
A: The freedom of working for yourself and not for someone else as well as to grow at your own pace and be in control of your success. You need a good ability to communicate well and have confidence in your abilities.
Q: What keeps you in freelance work? What would entice you to become or return to being an employee?
A: The ability to produce good work and keep clients happy. We rely completely on referrals and repeat business. Without that we would really struggle. Noting much, really. Can’t think of one thing right now.
Q: What type of freelance work do you do How would you define your "niche"?
A: Online video, photography and audio are our strengths. I guess you could say we work at keeping companies relevant and competitive. We also help organizations communicate their message in the best possible way.
Q: How do you build your business? How do you find clients? How do you market your services?
A: Through many long hours and dedication to quality. It comes back to referrals and repeat business. If you do a good job, then the business should start building organically, like it has for us. You hope that eventually clients find you. At the beginning it’s who you know. That’s why it’s important to start in an area you’ve been in for a while. Also, you have to be prepared to do things for free or for reduced rates so you have the opportunity to prove yourself to potential clients and get a body of work going. Social Media helps a lot. Website. Doing pro bono work. But best of all, word of mouth
Q: What advice would you give a communicator just starting out as a freelancer?
A: Think it through. Make sure that your willing to work twice as hard for half the money for the first little while. Don’t leave any unanswered questions and make sure you have a good definition of your service. Also, REACH FOR YOUR DREAMS!! ;)
