Nobody Likes a Sad Clown

I believe that humor is gift, a talent that some have and others don’t. Everyone has the ability to be funny or witty, but true comedians literally get off to the gratification of laughter. This obsession and passion can be beneficial to a comedian’s career, or it can destroy it. Being a comedian is hard, living up to expectations of hilarious hi jinx and somehow maintaining a stable degree of happiness. Comedians may make jokes to cover up the bad in their own lives, this may get a laugh but it wont fix the problems. When comedians try to be serious, the crowd laughs even harder. Thus is the vicious irony of humor.

Many famous comedians suffered from depression. Some sought help, like Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller, who both took medication for their disorders. Others deal with it in their own way, Richard Pyror used drugs and alcohol, John Belushi used drugs, alcohol and food, and Chris Farley used drugs, alcohol, food and hookers.

So does an aspiring entertainer stop entertaining before they delve deep into an emotional black hole or do they take their chances and hope for the best?

  1. Very insightful. I like this. I'm interested in hearing how your own experiences fit into all of it.
